This is an exciting time for the school's syllabus, with major changes to the basic system. Because of this, the syllabus day (at SESH salle on saturday 20.3., running from 11.00 to 17.00 with a lunch break) will cover the new material for the basic syllabus, including the new cutting drill, the new five drills, and minor tweaks to the syllabus form.

Gradings will be made based on the student's general level, rather than specific knowledge of the new material (it would be unfair to hold a student back from intermediate status just because the required knowledge base has changed).

Sign-up sheet can (soon?) be found at the salle notice board. Prices are SHMS members and beginners 40 € / Fulltime students, unemployed, under-18 members of SHMS 30 € / Non-SHMS members 50 €.

Immediately after the seminar at 17.15 we will hold the spring meeting of Suomen historiallisen miekkailun seura (SHMS) ry. All students of the school are recommended to attend. You may view the agenda of the meeting here: http://www.swordschool.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=201

And finally, from 19.00 onwards, the school celebrates its 9th birthday! Bring yourself something to drink and a snack to share if you wish, or get some friends to come along. The evening will traditionally feature champagne sabrage, jabbers and spontaneous wrestling. Everyone is absolutely welcome and encouraged to come (even if you can't make it to the seminar), so hope to see you there!

I will teach a seminar for Free Scholars on May 8th. We will cover a range of topics depending on the needs and interests of the participants, and as far as possible every free scholar will get some time one on one with me. Priority will go to branch leaders, class leaders, and free scholars from outside Helsinki, for obvious reasons.
Suggested topics include:
Applying the largo and stretto theory to winning freeplay bouts
Training usefully with less experienced students
Setting up useful freeplay training
Training with sharps

Class will run from 11 to 5 as usual, and is free of charge.
See you there.

In the intermediate class this evening I was giving Pirkka Palmio an individual lesson, and cracked the player's pass in the punta falsa play: then while I was busy elsewhere, Pirkka and Jukka Pajarinen went and made the counter to the punta falsa easy...
In short: the remedy is exactly as first drill: defender parries then passes offline (to the right) with a cut. This places his right foot forward as the punta falsa lands. His counter to the punta falsa has the same turn of the sword, but instead of passing around and getting all fiddly as before, he just passes in the same direction (diagonally forward right). This will often put the attacker on the floor, so be careful.
try this out... but be warned, I'm adjusting the canonical form of the drill to fit, as this is much, much easier than the previous version, while following the text precisely. And looks exactly like the pictures.

I am arriving in Helsinki for the upcoming smallsword seminar, but must be there the day before - on Friday that is . The Journey Planner of Helsinki tells me that my first bus would leave the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport... a bit after 14.00 and would arrive at the salle somewhere between 15-16 o'clock, it seems.

My point really was that, is there someone who would for example be training there at that time and could let me in the salle (or at later point as agreed on) - for it would be more than a little convenient for me to spend my night there?

Thank you beforehands.

Hi all,

If you didn't receive an email about "SHMS maksut ja viitenumerosi / SHMS fees and your reference number" from me yesterday, email me and then read on.

We are discontinuing the use of separate reference numbers for association membership and training fees. From now on, we'd like everybody to make all payments with the training fee reference number.

Yesterday I sent an email to everybody in our member registry containing a reference number, the association account number and such stuff. Of the about 270 people in the registry, 70 email addresses turned out not to exist anymore.

(Some came back with excuses for not training for a while or other updates - nothing like a salvo of emails demanding money to get people update their information :)

If you are a member of the association (and if you train in Helsinki, you should) and you didn't get the email with your reference number, we need to update your membership information. Contact me about it or fill a membership form at the salle. Thanks.
